Washington High School English teacher Rene Alvarez talks about how becoming Nationally Board Certified helped to change his approach to teaching
We recently sat down with Rene Alvarez, a dedicated English teacher with Washington High School in Franklin Pierce School District, to talk about the benefits of having Nationally Board Certified teachers in the classroom.
"With the National Board Certification process, the biggest thing that I gained was more reflection and refinement of my own teaching practices," commented Alvarez. "Looking at my practice and thinking about -- not just, 'Was I successful or not?' but, 'What did I do well, and how can I do better?'"
Certification also helped Alvarez to look at teaching in a more cyclical approach, learning to switch gears and adapt to new or different approaches in order to improve connecting with students and helping them in their ability to learn or reach certain learning objectives -- as well as to improve their overall experience of learning in the classroom.
