Spanish/English Dual Language Program Coming Soon to Auburn School District
Welcome to Auburn School System

The Auburn School District is launching a Spanish/English dual language program at Pioneer Elementary starting in September 2025 for kindergarten students.

Dual language programs foster high academic achievement and offer a strong foundation for students to become bilingual and biliterate. This program is optional and traditional kindergarten programs in English only will be available. The dual language program will primarily serve students at Pioneer.

What is Dual Language?

This optional program will provide students with academic and literacy instruction in both English and Spanish languages. For students in the dual language track, it is their general education.

For students in the program, their classroom teacher will be using Spanish for instruction a significant portion of the day. A foundation of literacy in Spanish is built first with English literacy coming later.  Spanish Language Arts is part of their core curriculum. Their learning specialists (PE, Music, Library, SEL, Science) teachers use English for instruction.

About half of the students in the class will have a home language of Spanish and about half will have a home language of English or another language. This balance helps to foster an environment in which students are learning each other’s languages.

Program Goals

The dual language program's goals are:

  1. For students to become bilingual and biliterate, with high levels of proficiency in both languages.

  2. That students will perform at or above grade level in academic areas (ELA, Math, Science) in both languages.

  3. That students will develop sociocultural competence.

The dual language program will primarily serve students at Pioneer.

Program Mission and Vision

The dual language program's mission is ultimately to empower students in our multilingual community to become bilingual and biliterate, fostering academic excellence and a deep appreciation for diverse languages and cultures.

The program's creators envision a future where graduates are confident and multilingual leaders who bridge cultures and thrive in an interconnected world.

Chinook Middle School Literacy

Walk into the Chinook Middle School library and you’ll feel it right away — it’s a place where students find themselves on the shelves and feel seen in the stories they read. At the center is librarian Josi Hodge. She helps students find books that match their interests and sparks a lifelong love of reading. Book clubs, personal recommendations and one-on-one conversations all build trust and belonging.

This work at Chinook is a living example of Highline’s commitment to equity, inclusion and stronger literacy outcomes. Every choice, every story, helps students grow in confidence and learning.

Asian American/Pacific Islander/Native Hawai’ian Heritage Month

May has arrived, bringing with it the annual opportunity to celebrate the richness and history of Asian American/Pacific Islander/Native Hawai’ian Heritage Month, when we recognize the strength, contributions, and legacies of Asian Americans, Native Hawai’ians, Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) who have helped to build and unite this country in each successive generation. “AANHPI” is an umbrella term referring to a vast and diverse group of people, ranging from the indigenous people of Hawai’i, all of Pasifika, and all of Asia. By some estimates, 60 percent of the world’s population lives in Asia or the Pacific.

Lilah Wakefield

When elementary students are asked what they would like to be when they grow up, many students answer with “Soccer player,” “Ballet dancer,” “Firefighter,” or “YouTuber.” (The last one is a recent addition in the last decade.)

For Bainbridge High School 9th grader Lilah Wakefield, when she was younger, her answer was “President.” So it is no surprise that Wakefield was among 12 students across Washington State selected to serve for two years on the Legislature’s Youth Advisory Council (LYAC).
