Muir Elementary Unveils New Outdoor Learning Lab
John Muir Elementary

In October, Muir Elementary School was transformed into a vibrant hub of hands-on learning as volunteers came together to build a new Outdoor Learning Lab. This inspiring initiative was made possible through a partnership between the Seattle Seahawks, Monolithic Power Systems and OutTeach, a national nonprofit dedicated to turning outdoor spaces into dynamic learning environments.

The event marked the culmination of months of planning and collaboration. Volunteers – including community members, educators and corporate partners – spent the day digging, painting and constructing features designed to spark curiosity and exploration among students. The lab includes interactive elements that encourage students to engage with science, nature and problem-solving in a real-world setting while exploring beyond traditional classroom walls. With support from OutTeach, teachers will be equipped with resources and training to integrate outdoor learning into their daily instruction, helping students develop critical thinking and collaboration skills.

During the event, Lauren Nabahe, Eastside Native American Education Program (ENAEP) coordinator for Lake Washington School District, performed a traditional ceremonial dance and made an offering to the Earth on the grounds of the project.

The Outdoor Learning Lab is now open and ready to inspire the next generation of innovators at Muir Elementary. This collaboration is an example from Lake Washington School District’s Strategic Framework value of Innovative Learning & Practices, allowing students to find success and well-being through unique and unconventional classroom engagement.
