Each year on March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day — a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality, with this year’s theme as #InspireInclusion.
IWD has been celebrating the achievements of women worldwide for over a century now, with 1911’s inaugural IWD gathering supported by over one million people. Today, millions worldwide join in the celebration to honor women and their accomplishments on an international level across the ages.
This year’s theme is a timely reminder that gender equity is vital, not optional, and that a focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society’s DNA. It’s never too late to challenge gender stereotypes and seek out inclusion and equity — to draw attention to conscious and unconscious bias, to call out discrimination wherever we witness it, and to champion renewed emphasis on creating and strengthening gender equity as an important and vital mission. It is a quest that extends to all aspects of society at large, so that allies join the fight for the advancement of women culturally, societally, historically, and beyond.
