Honoring Civil Rights for All on the Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act
A graphic image with the words Celebrating Civil Rights - Civil Rights Act and an image of Black marchers.

July 2 marks the anniversary of our Civil Rights Act—a landmark moment in U.S. history of the Act signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964. It prohibited racial discrimination in public places, as well as providing for the integration of schools and other public facilities. It also made employment discrimination illegal and was considered the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.

The Act was galvanized by a nationally televised address from President John F. Kennedy, on June 6, 1963, who asked American citizens to take action and to do their part to guarantee equal treatment of all Americans no matter what their race. Not long afterward, Kennedy directly asked Congress to consider civil rights legislation that would address voting rights, public accommodations, school desegregation, nondiscrimination in federally assisted programs, and more. After his assassination, Kennedy's call to action was heard and honored, and in November  1963, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed and quickly signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964, outlawing segregation and banning discriminatory practices in employment, and more.

As we celebrate the Act each year on July 2, we’re provided with a meaningful opportunity to reinforce support of civil rights, in pursuit of a more independent and equitable America for all.

Across PSESD, today’s students are doing more than studying the environment—they’re working to save it.

In Snoqualmie Valley School District, Meadowbrook School’s (MBS) secondary students recently took their commitment to environmental stewardship to the banks of the Snoqualmie River. Students partnered with Nature Vision and the Changing Seasons Farm, as part of their Blue Team program, to continue a vital, multi-year study of the local salmon spawning watershed near Carnation.
