2025 March Inside Schools: Cracking the Code to Math Success at CPSD
Clover Park March Inside Schools

CPSD is embarking on a dynamic transformation of its math curriculum to prepare all students with the skills and knowledge they need for future success. This initiative focuses on two key areas: a shift to a more engaging and relevant math experience in middle school, and a transition to a new, more effective curriculum in elementary classrooms.

Reimagining Middle School Math

CPSD is actively working to improve middle school math outcomes, recognizing that a strong foundation in these crucial years is essential for later academic success. The district is embracing a bold new approach, accelerating the sequence of math each grade studies to ensure all students have access to the most beneficial pathway. The ultimate goal? To make eighth grade applied algebra the norm, not the exception.

Next school year will be the first time eighth-grade students will join the applied algebra pathway and complete four years of math standards in three years’ time, positioning them for success in advanced high school coursework and beyond.

This shift is not about moving faster; it creates a more equitable and engaging math experience for every student. Through acceleration, CPSD aims to raise the bar for all learners. The collaborative classroom environment will benefit all, with advanced learners contributing to the overall dynamic and fostering peer learning. The early results of this initiative are promising as last year’s accelerated sixth grade class had the best test improvements of any middle or high school grade.

The eighth grade applied algebra course represents a significant advancement over traditional algebra. It will be more accessible, emphasizing context-based math and real-world applications, moving away from abstract textbook exercises. Students will not only master essential eighth grade math standards, but they will also apply these concepts to hands-on, relevant projects. Each day will be a blend of working on these essential standards and exploring the practical side of math through applied algebra.

This new sequence offers several key benefits:

  • Advanced Coursework: Providing all students with access to eighth grade algebra creates a more level playing field, ensuring that most students are prepared for advanced math courses in high school, including being on the pathway to AP calculus as a senior.

  • Improved Outcomes: By accelerating the math sequence, students will gain a deeper understanding of key concepts and be better prepared for future math courses.

  • Engaging Learning: Applied algebra’s focus on real-world applications will make math more relevant and engaging for students, fostering a greater appreciation for the subject.

Currently, a significant performance gap exists between students in traditional eighth grade math classes and those in eighth grade algebra and geometry. Bringing most students together in applied algebra will develop comprehensive math skills.

This initiative is also driving instructional improvements such as utilizing the Building Thinking Classrooms instructional approach detailed in the October Inside Schools article.

A Fresh Approach to Elementary Math

While the middle school math transformation is underway, innovative changes are also happening in elementary classrooms. CPSD is transitioning to a new math curriculum, enVision. This change comes after careful consideration and piloting of various curricula.

Teachers will receive extensive training on the new materials, ensuring a smooth and effective transition. The new curriculum will provide a more engaging and effective learning experience for elementary students, building a strong foundation for their future math success.

These changes are designed to not only improve test scores, but to also ignite a passion for math, build confidence and empower students with the skills they need to succeed in college, career and life.

Pride Month

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which commemorates the events of June 1969, when supporters of the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in New York City, rose up to protest police persecution and harassment against LGBTQ people. The uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw laws and practices that discriminated against LGBTQ Americans.

Bow Lake

In a fifth-grade classroom at Bow Lake Elementary, students are writing more, reading more and making stronger academic gains — thanks to a co-teaching model.

At Bow Lake, two teachers share the front of the classroom during the language arts: a general education teacher and a special education teacher. They plan lessons together, teach together and support students side by side. This is called co-teaching. They’re finding it is helping more students stay on track with grade-level reading and writing.

At Peninsula School District, their Transition to Kindergarten, or Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program was inspired by Norwegian education and is designed for children who lack access to high-quality early learning experiences before kindergarten. The curriculum in their Outdoor Transitional Kindergarten, meanwhile, includes at least one hour of outdoor exploration and learning each school day (if weather permits). It’s an opportunity for students to spend time outside learning new concepts and skills that incorporate with the curriculum from the rest of their school day.

This June, the Bellevue School District will host its annual Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI).

The institute consists of four days of professional development focused on improving student success in AP courses and providing teachers with a toolbox of instructional strategies, student learning activities, fine-tuned lesson plans, and assessments. APSI is a great opportunity for both middle and high school teachers to receive extra training and to learn about upper-level course standards in their subject areas even if they are not current AP teachers.
