2024 Annual Report to the Community
2024 Annual Report Image

Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD) has released its annual Report to the Community spotlighting the agency’s work in the 2024 school year.

The Annual Report includes useful annual Measures of Progress data along with stories that illustrate PSESD's commitment to achieving racially equitable and humanized school structures.

Available now for instant viewing online, the report spotlights the agency’s progress in fostering an Antiracist Multicultural Organization (ARMCO) at PSESD, and its deeply collaborative work alongside its dedicated regional partners as we work towards the realization of our End objective: Success for Every Child and Eliminate the Opportunity Gap by Leading with Racial Equity.

The report includes an opening Letter to the Community from Superintendent John Welch, an interview with Dr. Patricia ("Pat") Russell on the Academy for Rising Educators (ARE) in "Activating Powerful Voices in the Classroom," and an interview with Dr. Kenderick O. ("K.O.") Wilson in "Creating a Brotherhood of Love and a Community of Care for All," about his work with ARE and Kingmakers of Oakland (KOO) -- work which helps to inspire the PSESD Equity team in working to nurture and inspire black and brown educators in the Puget Sound area.

The Report also includes "Achieving a Sense of Hope and Community Partnership — Even with Difficult Discussions," an informative interview with Jahmad Canley, and interviews with Zivit Shechter Nissim (The Mockingbird Society) and Jeff Abdullah (Mockingbird Family) on leveraging data to ensure safe homes for vulnerable youth, and more. The Report ends with an overview of Agency Sub-Ends/Areas of Focus and a look at how it will continue to work to achieve those goals in 2025.

The PSESD Annual Report provides an easy and immediate way for members of the PSESD community — from students, parents, and families, to educators, schools, organizations, and more — to gain an overview of PSESD's challenges and accomplishments across the previous school year, and how it is effectively serving its community and partners and listening to the voices of the students and families it serves.

The Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD) offers regional math coordinators who operate as a statewide system to improve math instruction and increase student achievement through coordinated professional learning and customized district support.

A chart demonstrating Washington's goals to reduce chronic absenteeism each year.

Last month, Washington state joined a nationwide effort led by Attendance Works to change what attendance means in our schools. It's not about tracking who shows up—it's about recognizing that when students are in class, they're connected to teachers, peers, and the support systems that help them to thrive.

The National Chronic Absence Challenge set an ambitious goal: to cut chronic absenteeism in half over five years. For Washington, that means reducing chronic absence from 27% to 14% by 2029. Our school districts across PSESD are stepping up to meet this challenge.

Today, according to statistics from UNESCO, women continue to represent less than one third of the world's researchers.

Taking place each year on February 11, the International Day for Women and Girls in Science is working to change that, and the day helps to showcase existing good practices and solutions for building more inclusive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) ecosystems.
