The mission of the Puget Sound Learning Communities Foundation (PSLCF) was created to support the work of PSESD by expanding opportunities and enhancing the quality of programs and services to children, youth and families.
PSLCF currently pursues its mission through two main strategies:
- Helping Hands Fund Strategy – distribute emergency funds for children/youth/families enrolled in direct services programs operated by PSESD.
- Conduit for grant funding to PSESD – receive grant awards initiated by PSESD to expand and enhance their programing through its non-profit and tax exempt status.
A key component of our work is the Helping Hands Fund. These funds support emergency needs of families in many PSESD programs. Past contributions have helped families struggling to meet their daily living expenses and have provided the resources to keep heat on, pay rent, or purchase household necessities.
Since its creation in December 2010, the Foundation has provided more than $20,000 to over 100 local families. That’s a remarkable average of nearly $200 per family used to assist parents in meeting their families’ needs during times of unforeseen circumstances.
Your gift can increase and enrich the work being done by PSESD staff and make a significant impact to the lives of the children, youth and families served within the Puget Sound region. Please designate your United Way contribution to the Foundation.
Foundation funds are used to help families meet emergency basic needs, after all other government and community resources have been exhausted. Most requests do not exceed $250.
A family makes a request through the PSESD program staff providing the direct service that then makes contact with the Foundation. After determining if the request meets the Foundation’s criteria, a request is made to the Foundation through Denyse Guthrie (Foundation Board Support staff) to approve. If the Foundation determines that the request meets their criteria, a check is issued to the appropriate vendor (e.g., Puget Sound Energy), and the staff and family is notified.
