Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals

Do you have the training to identify individuals who are under the influence of drugs, other than alcohol?

Identifying subjects under the influence of drugs is not a difficult task when one knows what to look for. In the Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals (DITEP) you can learn what to look for and how to document your observations to help create a better academic environment.

School districts can improve their ability to identify students who may be under the influence of drugs using the DITEP curriculum. The student can then be referred to the appropriate services so they can return to school and obtain their education.

DITEP does not qualify participants as drug recognition experts (DREs). It is intended to make school personnel, nurses, principals, school resource officers and others competent and confident in evaluating and documenting students suspected of abusing and being impaired by drugs.

Issues of Abuse: What the Educator Needs to Know

Reader's Workshop

Learn to use the Reader’s Workshop approach in which thinking skills are emphasized to develop reading comprehension. Reader’s Workshop provides an opportunity for all students to self-select materials at their instructional level in order to learn the skills and strategies of successful readers as outlined in the Reading EALRs. While the overall goal is to instill a love of reading, the Reader’s Workshop approach allows the teacher to individualize reading instruction through conferences, literature circles, response journals, book projects, and skill lessons focusing on vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies. A variety of assessments will be modeled. Participants will engage in a simulated reader’s workshop and will self-select a reader’s workshop book to use in their classrooms.

Starting Strong Institute: Connecting Schools and Early Learning Providers; Birth Through Eight Years

The second annual Starting Strong Institute will focus on informing practice in four key components necessary for P-3 early care and education efforts: leadership, instructional practice, community coalitions and collaboration and family partnerships. Summer Academy: Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities - Communication Breakdown - How to Change the Playing Field

We know that all children communicate, some more clearly than others. Learn how to use various strategies for children with severe disabilities to increase their functional communication in your classroom. This workshop will examine augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems that address both receptive and expressive language delays and disorders. Communication systems that will be addressed are low-tech systems such as visual schedules, choice boards, story boards, and first/then strips. We will also address higher technological needs such as understanding appropriate symbol selection, literacy and AAC devices, as well as learning how to incorporate AAC strategies throughout the school day.

Structured teaching is an instructional intervention philosophy and methodology developed by the University of North Carolina’s Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children). Originally designed for people with autism, structured teaching has proven to be an effective instructional approach for a variety of students with significant developmental disabilities. Summer Academy: Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities - Challenging Behaviors

Challenging behaviors for students with severe disabilities can be one of the most difficult issues teachers need to address. This specific population poses unique challenges. This strand will focus on the principles of Positive Behavior Support (i.e., person-centered, quality of life, nonaversive) to develop effective supports for learners with significant disabilities and challenging behavior. Specific strategies for assessment and intervention to promote positive behaviors will be presented in this course. Finally, this workshop will provide examples and strategies for monitoring the effectiveness of an intervention.

ETS ParaProfessional Assessment

This electronic version of the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment is one of the options for individuals to meet the No Child Left Behind Title I Paraeducator Requirement. The assessment consists of 90 multiple choice questions, 30 in each of the following subjects: reading, writing, and math. The test will be administered online and no test takers will be admitted after online access has begun.

Individuals must score 461 or higher to pass the assessment.

Stage Rigging System Operator Training

Washington State Department of Labor and Industry/DOSH requires a competent person to oversee the operation of performing arts stage and theatre rigging systems. These competent persons can perform minor maintenance and inspections to assure all systems are functioning properly. This program is designed to meet the DOSH requirement of “competent person” training.

This session intends to raise awareness about many of the inherent safety-related challenges that exist on almost all stages. This is an onstage class covering basic stage rigging parts, principles and proper operating procedures. Educational topics include counterweight-rigging systems, curtain tracks and draperies, fire curtains and smoke vents, stage scenery and lighting fixtures. This session will conclude with the loss prevention importance of documented inspections, qualified system service and maintenance, as well as operator training documentation to protect the users and the facility’s liability.

AYV Mini-Project: Cross Curricular Projects with Photoshop CS4

This ten-hour, project-based, and hands-on class allows participants the opportunity to explore Photoshop and learn some practical applications for classroom and student projects. AYV Summer Institute: Animation with Premiere Elements

In this 30-hour course, you will learn to create stop-motion animation films using Adobe Premiere Elements. We will explore a variety of mediums including clay, legos, paper, pipe cleaners and white boards to create our animations. We will add music, dialog and sound effects using a variety of audio recording devices, stock libraries and Adobe Soundbooth. Digital video cameras, web cams, and digital still cameras will be used, so feel free to bring your own.

We will learn digital video terminology, explore the Premiere Elements interface, and use tools to create transitions, titles, and perform basic editing functions. This class will also cover creating a DVD and exporting video to the web.

During the workshop, participants will work in teams to make curriculum-based projects that will become great examples to use with your students before they create their stop motion films. Participants will be provided with web-based tutorials they can use in their classroom or for staff development.

AYV Summer Institute: Digital Storytelling with Photoshop Elements

Teach your students how to create exciting and engaging digital stories! This 30-hour, hands-on course will explore how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements as a storytelling medium. We will start by learning basic digital photography techniques, focusing on quick and easy ways to incorporate this skill into the classroom. You will learn how to create slideshows that include music and narration using Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer. Participants will take at least one field trip to take photos and utilize class time to experiment and create classroom projects. Finally, we will spend time exploring ways to use the powerful photo editor in Adobe Photoshop Elements as a communication tool. Online tutorials and resource materials you can use with your students are included.

AYV Summer Institute: Dreamweaver

This thirty-hour, project-based, and hands-on class allows participants to learn the fundamentals of using Dreamweaver to create exciting and informative websites. Tips and tricks will be provided on strategies for site architecture, accessibility, and functionality. This course will cover layout techniques and the use of Cascading Style Sheets to achieve a consistent look and feel across a website. Extra time is allowed for in-depth examples and advanced techniques and for working on your own website. After this course, you will be able to help your students build their own websites!
