Doing More with Less: ESDs Create Efficiencies to Help Schools and Students Facing unprecedented cuts to Washington’s K-12 education system, we all understand the challenging reality: serving all of our students with less. A lot less. The state’s educational service districts (ESDs) will be trying to help schools through this funding crisis however they can. ESDs have the ability and flexibility to develop new services and consortia in response to changing needs of schools and to leverage efforts and resources among districts and learning communities. ESDs will be working to improve efficiencies through pooling resources, centralized services, and cooperatives; securing new resources for our state and region; and providing specialized services that otherwise would not be available. ESDs have been entrepreneurial for many years. Last year, ESDs brought $40.2 million in new revenue to our state’s schools to increase and improve services for children. For every $1 in core funding, ESDs returned an average of $45 in educational programs and services – $250 per Washington student!
