Supporting Struggling Students in Math: Algebraic Thinking

Issues of Abuse: What the Educator Needs to Know

Reader's Workshop

Learn to use the Reader’s Workshop approach in which thinking skills are emphasized to develop reading comprehension. Reader’s Workshop provides an opportunity for all students to self-select materials at their instructional level in order to learn the skills and strategies of successful readers as outlined in the Reading EALRs. While the overall goal is to instill a love of reading, the Reader’s Workshop approach allows the teacher to individualize reading instruction through conferences, literature circles, response journals, book projects, and skill lessons focusing on vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies. A variety of assessments will be modeled. Participants will engage in a simulated reader’s workshop and will self-select a reader’s workshop book to use in their classrooms.

This electronic version of the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment is one of the options for individuals to meet the No Child Left Behind Title I Paraeducator Requirement. The assessment consists of 90 multiple choice questions, 30 in each of the following subjects: reading, writing, and math. The test will be administered online and no test takers will be admitted after online access has begun.

Individuals must score 461 or higher to pass the assessment.

Advanced Sexual Misconduct Investigation

his two-day training is conducted in an intensive and engaging hands-on manner. It is designed for participants who have prior training or experience in investigating claims of sexual harassment and abuse. We will work with an actual fact scenario, processing it all the way from intake of the initial complaint through a mock trial where you will present your case “for or against” and reach a verdict based on the evidence.

Participants are encouraged to discuss their own experiences and learn what approaches and solutions would have worked best. We highly recommend that at least one male and one female from each site and each school district department attend this training. You will:

  • Practice issue identification and analysis
  • Prepare a final investigative report
  • Participate in a mock civil trial

Preparing Your Students for the Adobe Certified Associate Exam

AYV Summer Institute: Animation with Premiere Elements

In this 30-hour course, you will learn to create stop-motion animation films using Adobe Premiere Elements. We will explore a variety of mediums including clay, legos, paper, pipe cleaners and white boards to create our animations. We will add music, dialog and sound effects using a variety of audio recording devices, stock libraries and Adobe Soundbooth. Digital video cameras, web cams, and digital still cameras will be used, so feel free to bring your own.

We will learn digital video terminology, explore the Premiere Elements interface, and use tools to create transitions, titles, and perform basic editing functions. This class will also cover creating a DVD and exporting video to the web.

During the workshop, participants will work in teams to make curriculum-based projects that will become great examples to use with your students before they create their stop motion films. Participants will be provided with web-based tutorials they can use in their classroom or for staff development.

AYV Summer Institute: Photoshop CS4

In this 30-hour course, discover what your students can do with electronic images and the powerful image-editing software program Adobe Photoshop CS4. In this class, you will learn a variety of ways to manipulate images and and explore student-centered projects that you can use in the classroom. Topics covered will include how to create and control layers; how to use basic filters; working with different image file types and their benefits and trade-offs; how to edit layers, including layer styles and blending options; how to insert and format text; how to use advanced brush and coloring options; and how to combine multiple images to create new graphics.

AYV Summer Institute: Digital Storytelling with Photoshop Elements

Teach your students how to create exciting and engaging digital stories! This 30-hour, hands-on course will explore how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements as a storytelling medium. We will start by learning basic digital photography techniques, focusing on quick and easy ways to incorporate this skill into the classroom. You will learn how to create slideshows that include music and narration using Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer. Participants will take at least one field trip to take photos and utilize class time to experiment and create classroom projects. Finally, we will spend time exploring ways to use the powerful photo editor in Adobe Photoshop Elements as a communication tool.
