April is Drug Free Washington Month Talk to Your Students About Being Drug Free You have probably heard it time and time again: "Talk to your kids about drugs!" It is good advice as kids who learn about the risks of drug use from their parents and other positive adult figures are less likely to use drugs than kids who have not had such conversations. Teachers, counselors, coaches and others at school can have a big impact! Where do you start? Explore some tips for getting the conversation started and places to learn more so that you feel better prepared with correct information about drugs.
April is "Month of the Military Child" The Washington State Military Kids & Families Partnership encourages our communities to take the time in April to do something special for children who have a parent serving in the military. This year's theme is "Military Children - Everyday Heroes In Your Community." The theme stresses the heroic sacrifices military children and youth make every day, especially during this time of persistent conflict. It also emphasizes that military children and youth are in every corner of the world, not just on military installations. Puget Sound ESD is now seeking middle schools in King County to join in collaborating with the King County Veterans Administration on a pilot support group project called "I am a Military Kid."

New! PSESD and Adobe Present Adobe Youth Voices The Adobe Corporation is continuing its support for Puget Sound area teachers and students by sponsoring an exciting new schedule of workshops. By covering the majority of the cost of offering these courses and donating the software for the PSESD lab computers, Adobe makes it possible for us to offer these classes for a much lower fee than would normally be possible. The program, which replaces the T3 (Train the Teacher) program, is called Adobe Youth Voices (AYV). This program of four modules is designed for teachers, paraeducators and teacher-librarians who are currently teaching students. One module, Tech Team Courses, is designed for teacher and student teams to explore tools and skills in digital storytelling. The classes will be tool-oriented and/or project-based, using AYV instructional materials and other online resources where appropriate.
Snapshot of Online Learning Last session, the state legislature created a new Digital Learning Department at OSPI, which is charged with a variety of tasks to support the implementation of online learning. One of the first tasks was to prepare a report for the legislature on the status of online learning programs currently in place in Washington State, which was completed in December. Collecting the data had some challenges, as there haven’t been clear guidelines for breaking out online students versus students attending school in person, but overall the trends are pretty clear. There is a lot of interesting information – and some disturbing data as well.

Sanford has worked in Auburn School District for 18 years. In her role as office manager she has been an ambassador for the school, creating a welcoming environment for students and families starting with the first visit and each encounter thereafter. A few of her many responsibilities are managing the school budget, payroll, and work orders. She is in charge of school communication, including the school calendars, website, newsletter, outside reader board, weekly bulletin and events notices. She has chaired the Safety Committee and written two successful safety grants, awarding the school funds to purchase safety supplies for the school crossing zone, supplies for the safety container and walkie-talkies for emergency communication. She collaborated with the local city government to help facilitate the installation of cameras in the local walking zone. In addition, she is the ASB Liaison and teaches students about fundraising finances, bill paying and handling of student funds.
