Washington ESDs Celebrate 40 Years of Service

Washington's nine ESDs are celebrating their 40th year of creating efficiencies and quality services. The ESD regional system is an essential link in our state's education system, helping to improve equity and access to educational opportunities for one million public school students.

ESDs play a vital role in helping school districts pools their dollars and leverage resources, especially during tough economic times. Today, Washington's ESDs are recognized as one of the strongest regional educational support networks in the country.

PSESD's contributions and accomplishments include:

  • Save millions of dollars annually for schools through cooperatives, grants, and partnerships with districts, higher education, and public and private agencies.
  • Leverage a $400,000 state allocation into more than $47 million of services for Pre K-12 schools and students. That equals $118 for every allocated dollar.
  • Create customized services to meet specific needs in all areas of Pre K-12 education including technology, learning and teaching, early learning and financial support services.

Are you taking advantage of all that PSESD has to offer? Check out the many programs and services available through PSESD on our website.

Visit www.psesd.org for photos from the celebration in Olympia of the 40th Anniversary of Washington's ESDs and text from Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen's speech.

Why Professional Learning Communities?

Staff development designed for high levels of learning for all students, teachers, and administrators requires a form of professional learning that is quite different from the workshop-driven approach. The most powerful forms of staff development occur in ongoing teams that meet on a regular basis for the purposes of learning, joint lesson planning, and problem-solving.

These teams, often called learning communities or communities of practice, operate with a commitment to the norms of continuous improvement and experimentation and engage their members in improving their daily work to advance the achievement of district and school goals for student learning.
