The ReLife School has moved into a repurposed elementary school in Puyallup. In addition to new classrooms and teacher spaces, the school has a gym, library, playground and soccer fields. The school will house 20 students, two full time teachers, one mental health therapist and six classroom assistants. The new space will allow ReLife to expand staff development, training and technical assistance around behavior disorders to educational professionals throughout the region.
This presentation focuses on the specifics of teacher evaluation within Washington state using Robert Marzano’s evaluation model that is grounded in the Art and Science of Teaching instructional framework. Learning goals for the session include: a general understanding of the Marzano model, a working knowledge of the scales (rubrics) for teacher feedback and evaluation that accompany the model, a working knowledge of the support that should be provided to teachers by schools and districts to render teacher evaluation a process that helps teachers improve their pedagogical skills, an understanding of various approaches to computing teacher proficiency scores for a given year, and a general understanding of the issues and pitfalls facing the current efforts within teacher evaluation.
Knowledge Bowl is a sport for the mind. Setup like Jeopardy, but for teams, Knowledge Bowl involves fast-paced thinking and teamwork. Questions are based on the topics covered in high school: such as math, science, history, language skills, literature, music, and geography, plus things like current events. Teams that qualify in a regional competition move to the state competition.
Military Kid Project at Showalter Middle School
The “I am a Military Kid” (IMK) pilot project, funded by the King County Veteran’s Affairs through the PSESD Prevention Center, is an incredible support group opportunity for students with loved ones in the military. One such group was at Showalter Middle School in Tukwila this past spring where, according to the 2010 Healthy Youth Survey, a number of students were identified as having a family member deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. With daily announcements and information provided to school staff, a total of five students, 3 girls and 2 boys, signed up for the IMK group.

Funding Challenges for Prevention Work
In the midst of this national and statewide recognition of the need and the effectiveness of prevention services, funding resources have plummeted for our school communities.
The Prevention Center, with it’s long history of systemic and professional development solutions to addressing the needs of all students and families while creating supportive learning environments, provides targeted direct service program support. Specifically, the Prevention Center currently provides programmatic and technical expertise in addressing the needs of youth at risk for dropping out of school, youth from military families, those with mental health needs, identified as homeless, involved in the juvenile justice system, as well as youth harmfully impacted by substance abuse.
